National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame

Bill Schindler

Inducted into the Hall of fame in 1985

No National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame would be complete without the name Bill Schindler being included.
Bill began competing in the small cars upon their introduction to the east coast in 1934. In 1936 he lost his left leg in a big car crash, but bounced back to become a great midget champion.

In an effort to keep the AAA out of the East in 1937, an alliance was formed and Schindler was elected President. In 1940 Schindler switched to AAA briefly and won the Bronx Coliseum Indoor Championship, then turned “outlaw” again when the American Racing Drivers Club was formed with Bill Schindler named as President.
Schindler won the ARDC Championship in 1940, 1945, 1946 and 1948.
Bill did join the AAA so he could race at Indianapolis, and he competed in three Indianapolis 500 Mile Races from 1950 to 1952. He was killed in a sprint car crash at Allentown, PA on Sept 20, 1952.
