National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame
Doug Caruthers
Inducted into
the Hall of fame in 1993.
|
At the time of his induction
into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1993,
Doug Caruthers held the title as the most victorious midget
car owner in USAC history with 98 feature wins. He also won
the National Midget Owners Championship in 1970, 1971, 1973
and 1978.
Caruthers owned the Viking Trailer Company in Anaheim,
California and fielded a midget driven by a young leadfoot
named Jimmy Bryan.

|
In the early 1950s, he built a
quarter-midget track on the Viking property and named it the
Jellybean Bowl. The track was a training ground for his two
sons, Jimmy and Danny, who went on to become USAC National
Midget Champions in 1970 and 1971 respectively. Today the site
is still dedicated to kids; it is called Disneyland!
In a twist of irony, Danny was killed at the end of the
1971 season after he had sewed up the Midget Championship, and
Jimmy died from cancer in 1975 after winning the Silver Crown
title. Doug won the Midget Owners Championship for the fourth
time in 1978 while battling cancer, and like his sons before
him, also died before the Victory Banquet was held.
