Joe Sostilio
Inducted into
the Hall of fame in 2003

A big
winner in New England, Joe Sostilio raced both big cars
(sprints) and midgets. He placed 4th in the first midget race
ever run at Williams Grove on October 5, 1941.
After World War II he was a big part of the midget
craze that took over the country. Competing with the Bay State
Midget Racing Association at places like |

Seekonk, MA, Lonsdale, RI and
Norwood, MA Joe placed 2nd in the BSMRA points in 1945. He was
4th in 1946 and won the Championship in 1947.
In 1948 he placed 6th in the United Car Owners Association
point battle. Joe was a part of the MacLeod Racing Team with
Hall of Fame member, Johnny Thomson.
Turning to AAA he won seven main events at places like
South Bend, Milwaukee, Akron, Miami, FL and Heidelberg, PA,
from 1948 to 1950. He also became a regular visitor to the
California winter circuits during this period. In 1952 he
placed 5th in the AAA Eastern midget Championship and was 6th
in 1954. He was also the AAA Eastern Sprint Car Champion in
1953 when he beat the great Tommy Hinnershitz in the title
run.
Joe Sostilio died in 2000 at the age of 85.
