National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame

Les Scott

Inducted into the Hall of fame in 2001

Les Scott moved from the west coast to the Midwest and made Lavonia, Michigan his home. He loved racing midgets, but his main income came as a test driver for American Motors in nearby Detroit. He was also a driver on the Mobilgas Economy Run and various auto performance certifications.

In the late ’50s his main midget ride was with “Booby” Logan. He began

racing with USAC in 1957 and beginning in 1965 never placed out of the top 12 in points for seven years. After the death of Jimmy Davies, Les acquired the famous Davies midget which added to his popularity with the fans. He took the Davies midget to Australia for the 1972 winter season.
In 1968 and ’69 he drove the Navarro Rambler powered car in an attempt at the Indianapolis 500. The car never made the race, but did set a record with Les driving. The engine locked up coming out of turn four and the car spun. Les steered the car backward from the exit of turn four, through turn one, across the short chute and ended up at the entrance to turn two, for the longest slide backwards in Indy history.
In 1974 and ’75 Les served as the President of the National Alliance of Midget Auto Racing and was the 1980 NAMAR Champion. He won the CORA (Car Owners Racing Association) Championship in 1975, ’76, ’78 and ’79, The Buckeye Racing Association title in ’78 and was the World Wide Auto Racing Champion in 1981 and ’82. Les died Jan 28, 2000.
